The 3rd component of our festival programme are our free concerts in Place des Martyrs, a beautiful 18th-century square in the centre of Brussels. These concerts offer free access to our festival and fill this magnificent "open-air theatre" each July with the music of Mozart and his peers. They are aimed at a wide audience of all ages, music lovers or curious newcomers, thanks to the works performed, which range from 18th-century rarities to well-known film scores. Another strong attraction is the variety of the ensembles that perform, which this year include two octets, one vocal and the other trombones. At times, this diversity may even extend beyond our national borders to include guest artists such as the Austrian group Primus Brass (2018). Our free concerts showcase this leading Belgian heritage site by bringing musical masterpieces to life within its neoclassical facades, themselves Mozart’s contemporaries.

MAKE IT SLIDE
Works by Mozart, Zimmer, Sweeling, Piazzolla, Hartley
After playing together for several years in the trombone section of the Royal Band of the Belgian Guides, Robin, Tom, Jan and Alexandre decided to combine their passion for chamber music and for trombone quartet performance by forming "Make It Slide". They performed for the first time in concert to backup the internationally-known trombone soloist Brandt Attema. Coming together around this important project made them want to continue performing as a quartet. For their first Mozartiade appearance, Make It Slide will be joined by four colleagues to offer us a programme ranging from trombone duets to octets.

CONTR’AIR
Works by Rameau, Glück, Haydn, Mozart, Rossini, Weber, Cornelius, Verdi, Fauré, Massenet
The vocal octet Contr’Air was formed by Damien Parmentier in order to explore a traditionally inspired repertoire for eight voices, ranging from the Baroque to the contemporary, either a capella or with piano accompaniment. The group"s chamber formation aims to facilitate the desire to reach those for whom the access to live performance or to classical music is not a given, to be closer to their audience. As for the name “Contr’Air”, it originates in the group’s desire to offer hope, joy and positive energy to their fellow citizens in the face of the widespread distress in our civilization and to strengthen social connectedness through the practice of vocal music. After last year’s delightful Neapolitan-flavored programme, Contr'Air returns this year with choral selections from operas with an Oriental twist by composers from Rameau to Massenet.

VENTI NUOVI
Works by Lully, Mozart, Baily and others
Created by Christian Debauve, the wind ensemble “Venti Nuovi” aims to promote the vast and varied repertoire consecrated to wind instruments, too seldom presented in concert and thus little known to the larger public. Under his direction, this flexible formation permits talented students at Belgian conservatories to explore and to perform these works, together with professional musicians, most of whom are themselves members of the prestigious Royal Band of the Belgian Guides. A partner of the festival since 2016, Venti Nuovi brings us this time a programme alla turca, in perfect harmony with the overall theme of this year’s edition.

ECB5
Works by Mouret, Mozart, Verdi, Crespo and others
The “Ensemble de Cuivres de Belgique” (ECB) is originally composed of 11 talented musicians, all from the leading Belgian orchestras, gathered around a collective, convivial and musical project. Together, they explore a repertoire ranging from Gabrieli to Bizet, from the latin tunes of Astor Piazzolla to favorite film scores. The various combinations of instruments allow them to highlight their different timbres, rich nuances and artistic sensitivities. Already present in 2017 and 2018, you will hear them this year in a smaller but equally sparkling quintet version, the ECB5, with a new programme ranging from opera classics to pop hits.
