MUSIC BY WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
LIBRETTO BY GIUSEPPE PETROSELLINI
sung in Italan
surtitles in Dutch and French
3 hours with intermission

Part musical comedy, part sentimental drama, this early dramma giocoso (premiered 13 January 1775 at Munich’s Opernhaus am Salvatorplatz) is the ideal showcase for our talented cast of emerging artists. In this rare gem, an 18-year-old Mozart unfolds his highly personal musical theatre for the first time, combining burlesque and drama to achieve the human. During a crazy day in the countryside, confusion reigns among seven characters who are each looking for love. As they become entangled in a spiral of increasingly improbable situations, each protagonist alternately uses seduction, anger, reproach or ruse. On the morrow, will they each recognise their soul mate? And, since they are seven, who will be left alone? Hidden identities, comic coincidences, crazy lovers, all brought to life by brilliant music – the great art of our favourite composer comes to life here in an imaginary garden full of twists and turns (premonitions of a trilogy yet to come).

The plot?
A year ago, the Marquise Violante Onesti was seriously wounded by her jealous lover, Count Belfiore, during a night of passion gone wrong. Believing her dead, he fled. But once recovered, she sets off with her faithful servant Roberto in his search. Failing to find her lover, the marquise has taken a position as a gardener, under the name of Sandrina, on the estate of Don Anchise, the Podestà of Lagonero. She has since aroused the amorous attentions of her employer, who has grown tired of his affair with his chambermaid Serpetta. Whereas Roberto, taken on as a gardener’s assistant under the name of Nardo, has himself fallen in love with the maid, who for her part is intent on raising her status by marrying the boss. Ramiro, a guest at Don Anchise's estate, seeks solace after a bitter break-up. Suddenly, his host's niece arrives from Milan and turns out to be none other than Arminda, the capricious socialite who has broken his heart. She is eager to meet her new fiancé, who, it soon becomes clear, is none other than Count Belfiore…
